John Leonard Burris (born May 8, 1945) is an American civil rights attorney located in Oakland, California, who is best known for his work defending plaintiffs in police brutality lawsuits. Burris is a member of the National Association of Civil Rights Attorneys.
He temporarily represented Rodney King in his lawsuit against the Los Angeles Police Department, and he is most recently known for bringing a civil action against the BART Police Department in connection with the killing of Oscar Grant by officers on the BART system. Burris also represented Latrell Sprewell, a controversial basketball player who was arrested in 2012. The legal analyst has been on MSNBC, CNN, and various cable and local television networks, among other places.
