An upcoming film titled One Night in Miami, for which a trailer has been released, seeks to take us back to 1964, but with a huge twist. The movie reimagines history by showing what it could have been like if iconic black personalities Malcolm X, Muhammad Ali, Jim Brown, and Sam Cooke all met up for one night.
The movie is an adaptation of an award-winning play also named One Night in Miami and marks Regina King's debut as a director; it's placed right after Ali defeated Sonny Liston. Ali, a championship boxer, Malcolm X, a renowned black activist, Brown, a pro footballer, and Cooke, a famous singer, all impacted American history in their own way and remain some of the most popular black figures in history.
Their fictional meeting in the film sparks powerful conversations on racial injustice, religion, and personal responsibility.
“One Night in Miami never once feels preachy, or overly speechy," Slashfilm's Chris Evangelista wrote after seeing One Night in Miami at the Toronto International Film Festival earlier this year. "The conversations seem natural, as does the chemistry between these performers.
"We truly get the sense that they all know and care for each other, and even when they’re on the verge of fighting, the respect and love they all share comes burning through. It’s impossible not to become engrossed with what we’re seeing; we want to spend as much time with these guys as we possibly can, and when the film fades to darkness, we’re sorry to see them go."
We imagine such a meeting between the aforementioned four would have been quite something. But the fact is, Ali did have Malcolm and his family over at his house while he was still Cassius Clay. The two were close friends for a while but Ali distanced himself from Malcolm after the latter split with Elijah Muhammad and the Nation of Islam.
Malcolm was assassinated on February 21, 1965, while giving a speech at the Audubon Ballroom in New York. Ali later admitted his abandoning Malcolm was one of his greatest regrets. The former boxer died in 2016.
One Night in Miami will be out in select theaters on Christmas Day. It will also release on Amazon's Prime Video on January 15, 2021.
